7 Most Influential Retail Designers of the Last Decade

Updated: Aug 5, 2022

Who are the architects and designers who made of retail design their main career focus? Here is our selection of the most outstanding talents from all over the globe.

1) Paolo Giachi (Italy)

"After studying Architecture at the University of Florence and graduating with a thesis on Lighting, Paolo Giachi spent 5 years in Asia developing retail projects for some of the most important European luxury brands such as Prada, Miu Miu and Jil Sander. Subsequently, Giachi moved to Milan where he was the in-house architect for Tod’s and Hogan. Imbued with enormous vision and taste and possessing vast experience working immersed in distinct cultural scenarios, Paolo Giachi approaches each project with passion and great diligence, providing inspiring solutions for his clients across the globe.

Today Giachi Studio is engaged in a multitude of retail projects around the world from mono-brand specialty boutiques to multi-brand luxury stores. In particular: the first digital fashion shop in Ukraine and the new concept store for Autori Capresi a Roma; and numerous luxury residences in Milano and in the rest of the world."

2) Halleröd (Sweden)

"Christian Halleröd and his wife Ruxanna, are the head and soul of the award winning studio based in Stockholm. Halleröd has been collaborating with the most important and influential brands of the whole Scandinavia, such as Acne Studios, Byredo, Toteme, and Axel Arigato.

Their projects are always characterized by the variety and the facets of textures, in combination with linear layouts and eye-catching lighting. Particular attention is paid to the custom furniture, designed down to the smallest detail."

3) Sophie Hicks (UK)

"Sophie Hicks became a chartered architect in 1994, prior to which she worked in fashion: as a stylist for Vogue Magazine; and for the legendary designer, Azzedine Alaia. She leads a practice with extensive experience in both the fashion retail and private residential sectors. A clear conceptual as well as practical thinker, with an instinct for the zeitgeist.

The practice began by designing private houses. In the years that followed, as luxury goods grew into a kind of religion, we were commissioned by a number of fashion companies to give architectural expression to their brand identities: we created Westbourne House with Paul Smith, his eccentric “shop in a house”; we developed a store concept for Chloé, with signature plywood walls, and used it to design over one hundred stores worldwide; we worked closely with Yohji Yamamoto to design his flagship store in Paris; and we created a new-build flagship store for Acne Studios in Seoul.

Our approach is first to understand a fashion company’s identity and then to translate it into an architectural form which embodies the evolving character of the brand. We define the concept at the start of each project and then use it as a reference throughout the architectural process. This method of working now informs all our projects."

4) Peter Marino (USA)

"Perer Marino is the principal of Peter Marino Architect PLLC, a 160-person, New York–based architecture firm founded in 1978. Widely credited with redefining modern luxury through equal emphasis on architecture and interior design, Marino’s work includes award-winning residential, retail, cultural, and hospitality projects worldwide. Well known for integrating art within his architectural designs, Marino has commissioned more than 300 site-specific works of art.

Current and recently completed projects include 'The Getty' an 11-story condominium and art gallery adjacent to The High Line in NYC, a high rise tower for Chanel in Tokyo’s Namiki district and Chanel flagships in Seoul, Paris, and NYC, Chicago, and Istanbul, 'The Lobster Club' restaurant in NYC’s Seagram Building, a new flagship for Louis Vuitton at Place Vendome in Paris, Bulgari and Ermenegildo Zegna flagships on 57th Street in NYC, a Cheval Blanc hotel in the historic ‘La Samaritaine’ in Paris, Dior flagships in Seoul and Beijing, and numerous private residences worldwide."

5) Lukstudio (China)

" LUKSTUDIO is a boutique design practice based in Shanghai, China. Founded by Christina Luk in 2011, the studio is comprised of an international team with diverse backgrounds and cultural perspectives. With a common desire to challenge the status quo of the environment, the team finds joy in creating meaningful design solutions for others.

Lukstudio’s strength lies in an ‘everything is possible’ attitude that is influenced by the surrounding context of Shanghai; a fast-paced city where East meets West and tradition is integrated with innovation.

Each project tells its own story, and Lukstudio is proud to identify a narrative, preserving it from concept through to completion to deliver memorable spatial experiences that delight and surprise.

We collaborate closely with clients and contractors to deliver artistic solutions within a commercial scope. The team enjoys experimenting with materials, light and shadow to make each project unique, while also extending the boundaries of architecture."

6) Specific Generic (Sweden)

"Founder Andreas Bozarth Fornell was born 1977 in Hagfors, Sweden. He led an eventful life skiing, playing hockey and worked as a construction worker prior to settling the profession of architecture, despite never having taken formal training in the field.

At the age of 15 he moved away from his family to attend a cabinet making school. Three years later he applied to Carl Malmsten School of furniture studies and was accepted and finished his Masters piece.

After graduation he worked daytime as a Cabinetmaker. During that time he also got an internship with a young Swedish architect where he practiced every day after office hours.

Andreas Bozarth Fornell has worked at a number of architects offices in Stockholm and in 2006 he started up the in-house architect studio at Swedish fashion label Acne Studios.

In September of 2010 Andreas Bozarth Fornell founded his own studio BOZARTHFORNELL ARCHITECTS.

Andreas Bozarth Fornell has executed more than a hundred projects such as retail stores, fashion shows, showrooms, hotels, houses and residential homes in fifteen different countries the past 19 years. The office works within all different fields of architecture but the main focus so far has been fashion retail.

The office works with clients such as Acne Studios, Sandro, Repossi, Kenzo, Moschino, DKNY, Opening Ceremony, Artek and various projects for private clients."

7) Sergio Mannino (USA-Italy)

"Established in 2008, Sergio Mannino Studio is a multi-disciplinary design studio specializing in retail, residential, interior, and furniture, for both private and commercial environments. The studio is based in New York, but recognized internationally, having completed over 250 projects in China, Italy, Canada and across the United States. Headed by Sergio Mannino himself, the committed team is made up of professional architects, interior designers, graphic designers and branding consultants.
